{"id":944,"date":"2021-05-18T09:35:37","date_gmt":"2021-05-18T07:35:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/injection-molding-and-compression-molding\/"},"modified":"2023-06-05T17:07:15","modified_gmt":"2023-06-05T15:07:15","slug":"injection-molding-and-compression-molding","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/legheleggere.com\/en\/injection-molding-and-compression-molding\/","title":{"rendered":"Injection molding and compression molding"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In this article we would like to speak about two molding technologies for plastic materials that are very useful for the production of implantable medical devices, but not only.<br \/>\nIn fact, in our molding division, we manufacture various components for surgical instruments.<br \/>\nin addition to implantable medical devices.<\/p>\n<p>These two technologies are <strong>injection molding and compression molding.<\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>Injection Molding<\/h2>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-78062 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Injection-molding-and-compression-molding1-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"inline_29_http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Injection-molding-and-compression-molding1-1024x683.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Injection molding, which is widely used in both the industrial and medical fields, is a process in which the plastic material is melted and injected into a mold.<br \/>\nThe injection of the &#8220;plasticized&#8221; material takes place at high pressures and at equally high temperatures, in order to allow the material to flow inside the machine and, above all, to reach every point of the mold.<\/p>\n<p>With this type of technology we can make both <strong>implantable and instrumental components<\/strong>.\n<\/p>\n<h3>Some examples of implantable products made with injection molding technology are:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>PLLA screws<\/li>\n<li>Peek cage for spine<\/li>\n<li>peek screws for ligaments<\/li>\n<li>CFR peek plates (carbon fiber reinforced peek)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-78063\" src=\"http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Injection-molding-and-compression-molding2-300x169.jpg\" alt=\"inline_311_http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Injection-molding-and-compression-molding2-300x169.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"169\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">PLLA screw (bio and absorbable by the human body material)<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-78064 alignleft\" src=\"http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Injection-molding-and-compression-molding3-300x295.png\" alt=\"inline_239_http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Injection-molding-and-compression-molding3-300x295.png\" width=\"300\" height=\"295\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">CFR peek Plate<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Concerning implantable products, molding takes place in ISO 7 rooms. The press dedicated to these components (previous image) is then directly connected to an ISO 5 area where the vacuum packaging process takes place immediately, to preserve the components from external contamination.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;\n<\/p>\n<h3>Other non-implantable products that can be made with injection molding technology are:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li>handles for instruments (multipurpose or disposable)<\/li>\n<li>test components for instruments<\/li>\n<li>accessories for instruments<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-78065\" src=\"http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Injection-molding-and-compression-molding4-300x164.jpg\" alt=\"inline_682_http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Injection-molding-and-compression-molding4-300x164.jpg\" width=\"300\" height=\"164\"><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000000\"><span style=\"font-family: Arial, serif\"><span style=\"font-size: small\">Example of handle for disposable kit<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Compression moldig<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-78066 size-large\" src=\"http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/05\/Injection-molding-and-compression-molding5-1006x1024.jpg\" alt=\"inline_69_http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/Injection-molding-and-compression-molding5-1006x1024.jpg\" width=\"640\" height=\"651\">\n<\/p>\n<h2>Compression molding technology differs significantly from injection molding.<\/h2>\n<p>\n&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Firstly, it is a type of molding which is normally used for thermosetting polymers. The process, consists in compressing the plastic material inside an impression of a heated mold. The heat of the mold fluidifies the thermosetting material which, when compressed by the press, gives shape to the piece. The machines used are also very different. In fact, these are vertical presses (image above).<\/p>\n<p>This technology is very useful when the parts to be produced are relatively simple, geometrically speaking (mostly flat and medium \/ large in size). The primary use is for implantable devices.<\/p>\n<p>One of the main disadvantages for this technology is the cycle time for each molding, which can be up to a few minutes. To overcome this problem, there is a tendency to make molds with multiple cavities.<br \/>\nIn our production site dedicated to plastic molding, it is a widely used technology for the production of a component that is part of an implantable knee device.<br \/>\nThis technology was validated decades ago by a major European manufacturer of medical devices, for its precision and for the surface finish of the parts.
