{"id":2038,"date":"2024-01-18T13:07:08","date_gmt":"2024-01-18T12:07:08","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/?p=2038"},"modified":"2024-01-18T13:19:23","modified_gmt":"2024-01-18T12:19:23","slug":"polyethylene-and-orthopedic-surgery","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/legheleggere.com\/en\/polyethylene-and-orthopedic-surgery\/","title":{"rendered":"Polyethylene and orthopedic surgery"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Polyethylene is a polymeric material that is used in the orthopedic surgical field for the creation of prosthetic components, such as:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>inserts for acetabular cups (hip prosthesis);<\/li>\n<li>tibial inserts, patellas (knee prostheses);<\/li>\n<li>All-Poly tibial plates (knee prostheses for allergic patients);<\/li>\n<li>inserts for glenoids (shoulder prostheses).<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The advantage of polyethylene are good biocompatibility, low wear and easy workability.<\/p>\n<p>However, it also has some disadvantages, such as low mechanical strength, thermal degradation and sensitivity to oxidation.<\/p>\n<p>Several types of polyethylene have been developed in order to improve their performance, such as the ultra high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMW-PE Ultra High Molecular Weight Poly-Ethylene).<\/p>\n<p>This kinf od polyethylene offers exceptional abrasion resistance, superior impact resistance, non-stick and self-lubricating properties and excellent mechanical characteristics.<\/p>\n<p>Polyethylene is processed in different ways to make prosthetic components, depending on the type of polyethylene and the desired shape.<\/p>\n<p>Some methods are:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Compression molding<\/li>\n<li>Milling<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Today we want to focus on the first technology, compression molding.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Compression-molding-Machine-scaled.jpg\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-2031 size-medium\" src=\"http:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Compression-molding-Machine-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Compression-molding-Machine-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Compression-molding-Machine-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Compression-molding-Machine-1152x1536.jpg 1152w, https:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Compression-molding-Machine-1536x2048.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Compression-molding-Machine-350x467.jpg 350w, https:\/\/legheleggere.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Compression-molding-Machine-scaled.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Compression molding is a manufacturing process that is used to create a wide range of parts, from aircraft components to baby bottle spouts. Clearly, in our case, the use is for the creation of knee prosthetic components.<\/p>\n<p>The compression molding process differs greatly from that of material injection.
